NORTHWEST WEATHER WATCH
Using Weather To Teach Grammar,Writing and Art
Lesson Plan - Using Weather to Study Adjectives
Objectives:
- Student will gain a better understanding of how
adjectives enhance and clarify writing through visualization.
- Student will demonstrate knowledge about how clouds
affect weather through art.
Activities
- Warm up for adjective identification. Student will identify and
list adjectives which describe the sky, clouds, precipitation, mood of, etc. in
two pictures depicting weather shown to the class. (Students are to
notice that the use of different adjectives "paints" a totally different
weather feeling in the two pictures).
- Teacher hands out a generic weather scene (paper with pictures
of very simple drawings of sky, clouds, water, etc.) Student will choose a
type of weather to illustrate and write a list of suitable adjectives in
appropriate areas on the paper to describe the scene.
- Student will use the Thesaurus to gather more interesting
adjectives to use in describing a scene with exciting or peaceful weather.
- Student will write a descriptive paragraph using the adjectives
generated by the type of weather chosen to depict.
- Student will draw or paint the weather picture described in the
descriptive paragraph.
- Students will hang up their drawings. As each student reads his
own piece of writing, the other students will try to identify which picture
goes with the descriptive paragraph being read.
