Educational Workshops

University of Washington Math Day. 23 March 1998. Presented three workshops featuring data downloaded from the Internet and analyzed for significance on desktop computers. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

UW Academy For Middle School: Earth and Space Science. 14-25 July 1997 (repeated 11-22 August 1997). Offered a class for middle school students to answer the call for engaging science programs, field-test curricula, and research student learning.

SCIence Live Returning Teachers' Workshop; Seattle, WA 7-25 July 1997. Provided an extension of the original SCIence Live Teachers' Institute from Summer 1996. Participants explored Earth and space-science concepts, reviewed current science standards, and wrote new curricula. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

SCIence Live II Teachers' Workshop; Seattle, WA, 9-10 July 1997 (repeated 10 October 1997). Hosted an intensive teachers' workshop featuring data from the Mars Pathfinder mission and Northwest Climatology. Participants downloaded "fresh" data from the World Wide Web, formatted it in Microsoft Excel, graphed it, and attempted to construct concepts related to the data. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

University of Washington Math Day. 25 March 1997. Presented two workshops on interactive integrated World Wide Web-based activities. Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

SCIence Live Teachers' Follow-Up Workshops; Seattle, WA 11 November 1996, 20 January 1997, and 26 April 1997. Hosted follow-up sessions for teachers participating in the SCIence Live Teachers' Workshop from Summer 1996. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

SCIence Live Teachers' Workshop; Seattle, WA, 8-26 July 1996. Hosted an intensive program that put teachers in the dual role of student and curriculum writer. Participants explored concepts in Earth and Space science, using data in teaching, issues in curriculum writing, and employing the World Wide Web as an instructional tool. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.

Astronomy Week, Pacific Science Center, Seattle, WA, 15-22 April 1996. Presented daily workshops on how to use the Internet as a teaching tool (Using the Internet as a Teaching Resource), displayed space science devices, engaged participants in space engineering activities, and managed a computer lab for World Wide Web browsing of space science sites. Lead: Janice DeCosmo and Rich Edgerton.
